This volume examines special issues associated with providing services and guidance to African American men. Although this group of men is like any other in its struggle with its social and economic problems, African American men experience a higher rate of murder, imprisonment, unemployment and racism. The contributors to this book provide a broad, interdisciplinary view of the possible solutions to the different problems facing African American men.

This chapter will begin with a description of the demographic characteristics of older African American males, review the historical events occurring during the development of the black American elder, and discuss the importance of a biopsychosocial perspective in the assessment of the older African American male. Then, it will consider specific diagnostic concerns and the assessment of cognitive function, affective symptoms, and psychopathology in the evaluation of the older African American male requesting mental health services and discuss strategies for engaging him in therapy. It will conclude with a discussion of specific treatment options.
