This volume examines special issues associated with providing services and guidance to African American men. Although this group of men is like any other in its struggle with its social and economic problems, African American men experience a higher rate of murder, imprisonment, unemployment and racism. Over the past decade or so, much attention in the United States has been given to the plight of black men and boys. The statistics are all too familiar: By now, most of us know that the number one killer of young black males is their cohorts; we also know that one in three of these young men, on any given day, is under the supervision of the criminal justice system. The most recent research also reveals that the rates of unemployment, teenage fatherhood, and death for young black males are higher than for any other social group.
