Getting Away and Getting By: The Experiences of Self-Employed Homeworkers
The past two decades have witnessed a resurgence in the number of women and men in the United States who do paid work in their homes (Silver, 1989). Some scholars see this development as emancipatory—a fulfillment of worker demands for more flexibility and autonomy (Beach, 1989; Carter & Cannon, 1992; Toffler, 1980). But, critics warn of the exploitation associated with homework; they charge that homework reflects a trend toward worker insecurity and a decreased standard of living (Boris, 1994; Allan & Wolkowitz, 1987). Public debates are confused by the varied forms of homework and by differences in homework experiences along gender, class, and race lines.
