In April 2012, women held approximately 19% of the seats in the national legislatures of Latin America and the Caribbean. Although 19% is still far from equality, women have clearly made gains in the region in recent years. Only five countries have less than 10% women in their lower house of parliament—Brazil, Panama, Belize, Saint Kitts and Nevis, and Haiti—while six countries have more than 30%—Argentina, Ecuador, Guyana, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, and Cuba (see Table 12.1.).
