Women have been active in the magazine industry as readers, writers, editors, and publishers since 1784, when the first magazine to include women as an important part of the target audience was established. Earlier magazines had targeted male readers only. The farsighted publishers of the Gentleman and Lady's Town and Country Magazine recognized that women also wanted reading material (Johnson, 1995, p. 96).
