Women, Gender and Disaster: Global Issues and Initiatives examines gender within the context of disaster risk management. In 2003, the world became acutely aware of our global vulnerability when Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), spread across the globe. According to the World Health Organization, SARS infected over 8,000 people worldwide and caused more than 900 deaths. The global outbreak was contained by the relentless dedication of health professionals, who worked in challenging conditions to ensure the safety of the public.
