In one fourth-grade classroom, I was sitting amid students avidly examining seashells I’d distributed for them to observe. These were scallop shells from Long Island beaches and I’d mentioned that years ago there were plenty and now there were hardly any. Hence, we had a discrepancy. What had happened to the shells?
