The Epidemiology of Mental Distress
The field of psychiatric epidemiology1 has undergone dramatic developments over the past six decades, particularly during the 1990s. The present chapter describes some of the milestones in this developmental history, including the evolution of increasingly sophisticated interview schedules used to assess prevalence and correlates of psychiatric morbidity2 in worldwide populations. Some of the key findings from recent studies utilising these new measures are given, whilst a survey focused primarily on neurotic disorders in Great Britain is described in some greater detail, to illustrate the breadth of information that is now possible to be derived through comprehensive epidemiologic studies.
