I have been conducting research informed by relational dialectics theory (RDT) for well over a decade now, and my colleagues and I have gradually developed a set of methodological practices that I refer to as contrapuntal analysis based on Bakhtin's (1984b) reference to his textual analysis of Dostoevsky's fictional works as “contrapuntal” (p. 221). Bakhtin's Problems of Dostoevsky's Poetics provides us with a concrete example of Dostoevsky's skill in creating multivocal prose, and Bakhtin's skill as a literary critic in identifying those “rudiments of counterpoint” (p. 221), but it falls short of presenting a codified set of methodological practices beyond the concept of double voicedness, which I have discussed in Chapter 5.
