In Chapter 3 we looked at the importance in individuals of the kinds of desirable personal qualities that we call virtues. At the end of Chapter 1 I had already noted that desirable or undesirable qualities can be attributed to organisations, not just to individuals. We might speak, for instance, of a particular school being a caring school (in line with Nel Noddings' vision outlined at the end of Chapter 4). Within a market system, principals may want their schools to be competitive. Some principals may want their schools in certain respects to be democratic.
