In their most recent report on the curriculum the QCA (2006) highlighted that children's ability to use scientific vocabulary was not improving even though more time had been spent on developing literacy skills. It is thought that this lack of understanding will impact on children's understanding of science at later key stages. Teachers have also identified this lack of progression but are unable to provide a reason. It is well known that words used in everyday life often have a different scientific usage. Current practice is not leading to improvements, so perhaps it is time to do something different! This chapter suggests some alternative approaches.
