Using Talk to Support Writing presents a new and innovative approach to the teaching of early writing. The authors discuss both theoretical and practical issues around using talk in the classroom to support children as they learn to write. Set within the context of national concern for achievement in the development of writing ability, it addresses the gap in understanding early teaching and focuses on the exploration of talk and writing interface.

Introduction

So far in this book we have considered what previous research has shown us about the relationship between talk and writing. We have looked at how undertaking research can help you in your role, whether as a class teacher or otherwise involved in working in schools. We have also looked very carefully at how the three different strategic elements of talk worked with children in the classroom. We have examined how this talk can come through in their writing and we have also reported what children told us about what they think about writing. For the final chapter, the focus turns to the teacher.
