Introduction
Cross-disciplinary studies of homosexuality in western cities have been plentiful over the last few decades (Abraham, 2009; Chauncey, 1994; Houlbrook, 2005; Knopp, 1998; Podmore, 2001; Valentine, 1993) and various studies of gay and lesbian cultural politics in non-western cities have emerged more recently (Bacchetta, 2002; Martin, 2000; Oswin, 2005; Rofel, 1999; Tucker, 2009). It is thus by now well recognized that cities play a profoundly important role in facilitating the formation of gay and lesbian communities and movements around the world.
