Instructional coaches are essential for professional learning in Impact Schools. Principals provide leadership, guide the development of the Target, and observe and encourage teachers as they grow and move toward the Target. Workshops introduce teachers to the practices that are in the Target. Intensive learning teams provide opportunities for teachers to rethink curriculum in light of the Target. Coaches help teachers take all the ideas and practices they are learning and bring them to life. Without coaching, too often, no significant change occurs (Cornett & Knight, 2009).
