The meeting had gone all wrong. Following the success of the neighborhood fair, Yolanda, now the new exec at ViVa, recommended to the board the creation of a neighborhood volunteer corps. The board was composed, equally, of old-timers and newcomers. The “vets” included some of ViVa's founders, Black women who had established the agency as a co-op 25 years earlier. Newcomers were not only relatively new to the neighborhood, but also to the United States. Although she'd expected some questions, Yolanda was totally unprepared for the opposition to her ideas and the emotionality of the response of some board members.
