On the evening before his first class, Bill decided to scrap his teaching notes. No sense having students listen to an old retired exec telling war stories, he reasoned, when they could be sharing with and learning from each other. In place of the notes, he sketched out three brief scenarios of work-related problem solving. He made sure that each of the scenarios included at least 10 action verbs in common (like “coordinate,” “record,” “inform,” and “confront”). On his way to the university, Bill stopped at a copy center to enlarge the scenarios, poster size. He got to class a bit early, wrote three words at the top of the chalkboard—MANAGEMENT, LEADERSHIP, and BOTH.
