I remember how shocked I was on first coming to this agency. At the community center where I'd worked before, we all came to work in comfortable clothes. Maybe no T-shirts, jeans, or shorts, but comfortable, like what you would wear to a Saturday night movie with friends. Here, a tie and jacket were essential for the men. No tennis shoes for women, though pants were OK if they were part of a suit. You're a professional, my supervisor told me, and you're expected to dress the part. This was back in the 1980s but it felt like the 1950s, or at least that's how I imagined it.
