Women with eating disorders and women addicted to alcohol or drugs share the strategy of using the physical body to silence emotional pain. Many of these women have suffered childhood trauma, as described in the previous chapter. This chapter focuses on some of the possible aftereffects: the difficulties caused when women attempt to care for their hurt selves through eating, avoidance of food, or use of addictive substances.
