The aim of this book is to satisfy the need for a single accessible textbook which offers a broad introduction to the range of literatures and approaches currently contributing to digital game research. A Player-Centred Approach to Digital Game Design
Interactive digital games are but another chapter in the long history of gaming, and the process of game design is much the same, regardless of the actual medium in which the game is situated. Whether designing board games, role-playing games or video games, the five stages of game design, illustrated in Figure 5.1, are necessary (Bates, 2001; Crawford, 1984; Dunnigan, 2000; Pederson, 2003; Rollings and Morris, 2000; Rouse, 2001).
