At the completion of this chapter, you should be able to:
- Understand that childhood is an important phase in human experience, and that art offers a significant play-based opportunity to appreciate the competency of young children,
- Discuss the child's positioning of self within the drawing (e.g., as subject or spectator), and whether the content is specific to the young artist or meant to stand for ‘universal’ ideas (i.e., humankind, a rainforest), and
- Appreciate how children's narratives include ambiguous terms, such as ‘this’, ‘that’ or ‘there’ and how their telling of the drawing is different than storying.
