Any attempt to understand art, and to help children learn through doing artwork for themselves, is greatly helped by realizing at the outset that there are no neat and tidy definitions to tell us exactly what art is. Even within our own society, the word ‘art’ means too many different things to too many different people to be summed up adequately in a few words, and people of other times and cultures thought, and still do think, of art in ways quite different from our own.
