In our last chapter, we pointed out that David Coleman seems to believe that effective instruction focuses on the teaching of individual texts. One manifestation of that belief is his emphasis on text-dependent questions, an emphasis that we argued is misguided. Another manifestation of that belief is his emphasis on teaching texts in isolation from one another. Our worry about this emphasis, one that's demonstrated by some of the Standards themselves, is that it runs counter both to what we know about how people read and develop their reading abilities and to what we know about effective curricular organization. ...
