Gender and Countertransference
One of the more difficult issues for most therapists working with the mother in an incest family is becoming aware of their own counter-transference reactions. This is an arduous undertaking because so many of the reactions are deeply embedded in cultural expectations of mothers and are difficult to untangle. In this chapter, I will explore the manner in which some of the issues noted earlier about gender expectations affect what the therapist brings to her or his work with the mother in the incest family.
