Interpersonal trust is the perception of personal safety such that others will not diminish or harm your interests. Interpersonal trust is essential to teamwork because it affects psychological safety, the primary factor found in productive teams. When interpersonal trust is present, group members are comfortable and willing to show their authentic selves. In settings of interpersonal trust, individuals are treated with respect and believe others see them as having integrity, being competent, reliable, capable, and consistent. While individual personalities (and the demeanor of leaders) might affect trust, the perceptions of team members about one another make the most significant contributions to interpersonal trust.
