The word platform originated from the Middle French word plate-forme. The first syllable, plate, signifies a plate or something flat and conveys a sense of stability. The second syllable, forme, suggests an underlying form or structure. The two concepts intermingle to form a wonderful visual and conceptual image. No wonder the word has been picked up and used in so many different contexts:
- When the train conductor yells “all aboard,” you embark from a platform or a structure that is relatively flat and stable.
- When software engineers develop an operating system, such as Microsoft's Windows 7 or Google's Android, they are creating a platform for users to launch a wide array of other applications.
