In writing about brief therapy I find that my starting point is the question: What is brief therapy? Is it one day? one month? one year? one decade? When questioning the nature of short-term therapy it occurred to me that Berne was one of the forefathers of brief therapy. In the context of expensive and time-consuming psychoanalysis he introduced the idea of the one-session cure which continues to be a challenge to us all! In Britain the idea of brief therapy has been taken up particularly by the National Health Service culture which demands short-term treatment because of economic restraints.
