There are a number of distinctive features of tourism that play a major role in shaping its production and consumption. This chapter outlines some of them and then proceeds to examine the following themes: the nature of tourism commodification; the extent to which tourism production and consumption are determined by capitalist relationships, with illustrations of how these vary, between mature liberal market economies and less developed and emerging market economies; the insights from applying regulation theory to tourism; and the extent to which globalization undermines the utility of regulation theory, given that the latter tends to assume the primacy of the national state.
