Since working in General Practice, I have been surprised to discover how many people have difficulties with food. These are not necessarily people with specific eating disorders, but are people experiencing difficulties in controlling what they eat, how they eat, whether they eat, or difficulty in controlling the consequence of eating - their weight. What seems to be occurring is that the client has become trapped into a pattern of eating or not eating that becomes habitual. These people are not necessarily emotionally disordered, but have a conditioned behavioural pattern that needs to be unlearned, or the food-related problem is a symptom of some other form of distress.
