Counselling People with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
When people are involved in, or witness, a trauma of some sort, they experience a severe form of arousal reaction. This experience of trauma varies according to the individual's resilience and coping abilities, and it is the individual's perception of the event that is important rather than the counsellor's assessment of the severity of the trauma. The Disasters Working Party found that after such an event, 40–70 per cent of people experienced chronic distress in the first month, 24–40 per cent after one year, and 15–20 per cent for longer than two years (Home Office, 1991).
