Increasingly, GPs are beginning to realise that even patients with an identifiable physical illness also suffer emotional distress as a consequence of that illness. GPs are therefore choosing to refer such people for help with the emotional side of their illness, thus facilitating a more holistic approach to patient care. Research shows that counselling can greatly reduce the distress of those suffering chronic ailments (Taylor and Aspinwall, 1993).
