There are many ways that adults suffer from the consequences of their childhood. Physical and sexual abuse immediately spring to mind as they have been brought into contemporary public consciousness. But some adults suffer from their childhood even though on the surface it appears they had reasonably safe and secure upbringings. These people may have suffered emotional deprivation, social neglect or scapegoating. They may have been loved too little, not loved at all, or been scorned in a step-parenting situation.
