Single-case design

Recall that Tier 3 comprises the entire case study, resulting in an intervention, which—if of high intensity—is evaluated at Tier 3b for purposes of determining special education eligibility. There are three separate but related purposes for using single-case design research methods at Tier 3 of the RTI process. First, as discussed in Chapter 5, hypothesis testing uses a brief, single-case-design experiment to confirm or discard hypotheses before an intervention is selected for extended use. Second, single-case designs are used to interpret the results of progress monitoring in order to guide decision making. Finally, data from single-case designs reveal discrepancies between expected and actual performance that can be used for special education eligibility decisions at Tier 3b, as discussed in Chapter 9.
