In November 2010, Brandon Stanton, an unemployed history major who was scraping by on unemployment checks and loans from family and friends, started an online blogging project with a goal to capture the portraits of 10,000 ordinary people living in New York City. Interestingly, although his Humans of New York (HONY) project is now world famous, the growing collection of portraits was initially slow to gain a following.
