Special children are often named as such because the conditions and associated difficulties they present with mean their learning needs are different from those of an ordinary child. Throughout this book, this term will be used to refer to children with special educational needs.
The purpose of this chapter is to introduce readers to the different categories of disabilities that special children and their families live with daily. It is important to remember that children with special needs may present with one or more of the given disabilities.
