Introduction

Analytics has been one of the buzzwords of the 21st century. A Google search on ‘analytics’ for the calendar year 2000 yields 143,000 hits but five years later this had increased to 2.92 million. By 2010 there were 5.81 million hits on Google but thereafter the growth has been exponential with 122 million hits in 2016. The average annual growth rate between 2000 and 2016 was 52.5% but in the most recent five-year period, 2011–2016, the annual growth rate was 68.1%.
