Sports clubs as local nonprofit organizations exist in all European countries. In 2014, 12% of EU citizens held a sports club membership (European Commission, 2014). Admittedly, membership rates vary largely among European countries, as sports clubs have different positions in national sports structures and policies, and because historical, cultural, and socio-economic differences led to country-specific developments (cf., Scheerder, Willem, & Claes, 2017). However, sports clubs largely share similar roots (Hoekman, van der Werff, Nagel, & Breuer, 2015b).
