Introduction

This chapter addresses workplace discipline and grievances. For some observers, these topics suggest traditional workplace environments where there are formal and detailed disciplinary procedures and highly structured grievance processes. Within such environments, managerial action is guided by detailed policies and employees have access to processes with multiple steps for appealing disciplinary or other management action (Bamberg, Kohn, & Nahum-Shani, 2008; Lewin & Peterson, 1999; Pohler & Luchak, 2014). In some ways, the imagery suggested by the chapter title seems far afield from many workplaces in the modern economy.
