When CES spearheaded CFGs in the early 1990s, senior staffers such as Paula Evans, Gene Thompson-Grove, and Mary Hibert-Neuman spent an enormous amount of energy training those teacher leaders who would facilitate the CFGs in their respective schools. Collaboration is, after all, a human endeavor, and plotting a course through the complexities of such work requires a facilitator who is skilled in the ways of interpersonal navigation. Somewhere during the metamorphosis from CFG to PLC, facilitation skills have taken a back seat to the relentless drive for student results. I have learned that, without adequately training PLC coaches, this drive for results is all too often more bumpy and less effective than it has to be.
