Tit-for-tat Air Raids
In tit-for-tat attacks, the LTTE caused havoc in the Anuradhapura air base in October 2007 only to lose its top leader S. P. Tamilselvan in a pre-dawn raid by the Air Force in its hideout in Killinochi in November. The two attacks showed the worsening military situation.
The Anuradhapura mission was spectacular in that it was the first combined operation by the LTTE's ground forces, a suicide squad of Black Tigers, and its still nascent air wing in a pre-dawn attack. The Sri Lankan government itself admitted that nine airmen died in the attack and four more in a helicopter crash.
