LTTE takes to wings

Fighting with its back to the wall, the LTTE sprang a surprise in March 2007 by successfully mounting its first air attack. It daringly chose the heavily guarded Katunayake airport. If the July 2001 ground attack on the same airport exposed the holes in the security setup, the air attack showed even more pitilessly that low-flying planes can escape detection by radars. Adding insult to injury, the two planes involved in the attack returned to base before the air force could send its jets up to intercept them.
