One month before the Parliament elections, the LTTE suffered for the first time a major split with its Batticaloa-based eastern commander Vinayagamoorthy Muralitharan alias Karuna Amman revolting against Prabhakaran's leadership in what was seen as a tussle for the second position with intelligence chief Pottu Amman. The LTTE, in a blitzkrieg, crushed the revolt in Batticaloa and Karuna, to avoid unnecessary bloodshed, asked his cadres to go back to their parents or to the LTTE.
