When Colombo Was in Flames
The capture of Jaffna by the Sri Lankan forces was more than offset by the loss of Mullaitivu to the Tiger rebels. This hardened the stand of the main opposition UNP at the all-party meetings on a broad political package Chandrika had evolved to resolve the ethnic strife. As a result, she had to show more military gains in the north to sell her package to Sinhala hardliners in the south. It was a Catch-22 situation as such gains only made the hardliners more inflexible. Their thinking was, ‘since the Tigers are losing, why should we show more accommodation towards them’.
