Palliative Care: One Does Not Need to Be Terminally III
Palliative care, and in particular end-of-life care, is receiving attention as an important component of health care (Block & Billings, 1998; Block, 1999). Impetus for this attention is, in part, the Support study (Support Principal Investigators, 1995) and the findings that patients were not ending their lives in comfort or in the place of their choosing. This situation was shown to be due largely to a failure of physicians to discuss these vital issues with their patients in a timely manner (Solomon, 1995).
