Partnerships for the New Millennium: Development of Clinical Decision-Making in a Practice Profession
Partnerships between nursing education and nursing practice can be traced to the beginning days of professional nursing (Nightingale, 1860/1992). The earliest preparation of nurses took place in hospital-based diploma programs, which used student nurses as a major portion of the hospital labor force delivering direct patient care. (Ashley, 1976). As nursing moves into the new millennium, lessons of the past and the current state of nursing education, practice, and research at the University of Pennsylvania set the stage for visionary nursing leadership.
