Within the past 15 years a distinction has been made between global and specific models of environmental action. Global models of environmental action assume that “good” aspects of the environment will uniformly enhance development, whereas “bad” aspects of the environment will uniformly depress development. In contrast specificity models assume that different aspects of the environment will influence different aspects of development (Hunt, 1977; Wachs & Gruen, 1982).
