The Power of Learning Goals
This chapter looks at the important role played by goals, their benefits and key features.
Learning goals are targets to aim for and standards for evaluating student performance. When students set goals for themselves they act as representations of their future and, if they matter to them and are seen as attainable, they will be powerful motivators (Ames and Archer, 1988; Klein et al., 1999; Nuttin and Lens, 1985). Future goals help both to structure and energize student behaviour. The very process of working towards valued goals enhances student well-being. Successful self-determination is a process of identifying goals, pursuing and attaining them, then seeking other goals.
