Non-Violent Movements and the Transformation of Power*
The ‘Prince’ is the classic ruler who directs state power and wages war. Until today, state politics, as a scientific discipline as well as a political profession, is dominated by the so-called ‘realist’ thinking, prescribing self-help through superior military power in the interests of the state. This long-standing almost naturalized view on the management of power assumes a top-down hierarchy in which superior force and coercion is what matters. In this chapter, such a taken-for-granted view is challenged in a fundamental way. In a reinterpretation of the Gandhian ‘non-violent war’, it is argued that the subjects of the Prince might turn realist power upside down.
