The twenty-first century continues to witness large-scale violence in the public sphere. The subsequent disenchantment with political activity is grounded in the belief that political power is identical with violence. This depoliticization of human life, reflecting a disempowerment of people, is accompanied by a tendency to replace political identity with communal, ethnic, religious or familial identity.
