Since the banking crisis of 2007–09, public denunciations of ‘inequality’ have increased markedly. These draw on a diverse range of moral, critical, theoretical, methodological and empirical resources. Marxist analyses have highlighted growing inequalities as a symptom of class conflict, which neoliberal policies have greatly exacerbated (Harvey, 2011; Therborn, 2012). Statistical analyses have highlighted correlations between different spheres of inequality, demonstrating how economic inequality influences social and psychological wellbeing (Wilkinson & Pickett, 2009).
