Why do children behave the way they do? In particular, why do they misbehave? Let's rule out the obvious things first, such as feeling off colour or being understandably upset by the death of someone very close. Let us just consider the child whose behaviour has been very worrying and unacceptable over a long period of time despite our best efforts to change it.

First of all we must be aware of the half-conscious, half-formed ideas we carry around in our heads to explain behaviour problems. These get in the way every time we start to try to deal with misbehaviour even though we may not be fully aware of them.
